Fishing Report – January
January Fishing Report
Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a great 2022. For a good year resolution try new spots and new techniques.
This month will be the sheepshead tournament on January 21st . My favorite baits and rigs for sheepsheads is fiddler crabs and shrimp on a crusher jig or a 1/0-2/0 circle hook with a split shot weight just above the hook, I like to target the bridges, dock pilings and rock piles but the inlet can produce some of the bigger sheepshead.
Inshore: The redfish and trout bite can be really good this month. You can target these fish in the creek holes, flats and the ICW banks. Try jerk baits and paddle tails on a ¼ iig head or weedless jerk bait hook. Make sure your super quiet when targeting them on the flats. Use a ¼ jig head with a shrimp or mud minnows on the ICW banks.
Surf & inlet
The surf and pier fishing has been good with whiting, black drum, pompano and flounder with the occasional trout and redfish. Use shrimp, clams and sandfleas if you can catch them on a pompano rig or jigheads. Try the rocks and docks for the bigger sheepshead with a fiddler crab or shrimp on a jig head or a 2/0 circle hook with split shot. They could be schooled up around the sand bars too.
Offshore
The bottom bite can be good when the temperature drops for grouper, seabass, snapper and trigger fish, use pinfish, sardines or squid. If the weather is calm enough and you can make to the ledge it could be a good month for big wahoo or sailfish. High speed troll with rigged ballyhoo or your favorite lures with dark colors.
Good Luck and be safe!
