Ever wonder – Why Your Reel's Drag Gets Stronger During a Long Fight? Most anglers
know how to set their reel's drag before they cast a line. What many don't realize is that
the drag doesn't stay the same throughout the fight. In fact, as a fish takes line from the
reel, the drag gradually becomes stronger—even though you haven't touched the
adjustment knob.
Understanding why this happens can help you land more fish and avoid one of the most
common causes of broken line.
A fishing reel's drag works like a safety valve. Inside the reel, a series of friction
washers create resistance that allows the spool to turn only when a fish pulls hard
enough. Instead of putting all that strain directly onto the line, the drag lets the line slip
from the spool under controlled pressure. It works in conjunction with your fishing rod.
This protects your tackle while allowing you to keep steady pressure on the fish.
A good starting point is to set the drag at around 30% of the line's breaking strain. So, if
you're fishing with a 15-pound line, a drag of about 5 pounds is a sensible setting. It's
enough to wear down the fish while leaving a comfortable safety margin.
The interesting part comes once the fish starts running.
As line leaves the reel, the spool gradually gets smaller because there are fewer layers
of line wrapped around it. Although the drag inside the reel is still applying the same
braking force, the line is now pulling from a smaller diameter. That changes the amount
of force needed to make the spool turn.
Think of it like using a wrench. A long-handled wrench gives you plenty of leverage,
making it easier to loosen a stubborn bolt. A shorter wrench gives you less leverage, so
you have to pull much harder. Your fishing reel works in much the same way.
When the spool is full, the line has plenty of leverage over the drag system. As the
spool empties, that leverage decreases. The result is that the tension in the line
increases, even though the drag setting hasn't changed.
This is why a drag that felt perfect at the start of the fight can become surprisingly heavy
after a powerful fish has stripped a lot of line. If enough line leaves the reel, the drag
can increase to the point where the line is close to its breaking strain. That's when
hooks pull, knots fail, or the line parts unexpectedly.
Experienced anglers often compensate for this without even thinking about it. During a
long run, they'll ease the drag back a fraction to keep the pressure on the fish more
consistent. It's usually only a small adjustment, but it can make a big difference when
fighting large, hard-running species.

The next time you're hooked up to a fish that's taking plenty of line, remember that your
drag isn't behaving exactly as it did when the spool was full. Understanding this simple
principle helps explain why some fish are lost late in the fight and why small drag
adjustments can pay big dividends.
Sometimes, landing a fish isn't just about having the right gear—it's about
understanding how that gear really works.
